The site

The land is located to the north of Eastern Green, on the western edge of Coventry.  The area covers just over 142 hectares and forms the majority of the site allocated in the Coventry City Council Local Plan. It is highlighted in red on the map:

Coventry City Council’s Local Plan has released the Eastern Green site from the green belt to enable its development.  Green belt land can be altered as part of the Local Plan review process, to meet development needs in a sustainable and appropriate way. This followed a comprehensive review and assessment of the green belt by the city council.  The land surrounding the Eastern Green site, will remain protected as part of the green belt.

The proposed development is responding to the strategic principles set out by Coventry City Council for the site, enabling delivery of the council’s vision for the city

  • supporting businesses to grow – employment land and new business investment or expansion

  • raising the profile of the city – Eastern Green will represent a new gateway to the city, helping to raise the profile and image of Coventry

  • creating an attractive, cleaner and greener city – an attractive, extended ‘green spine’ of public open space and footpaths will be created along the Pickford Brook.  Sustainable building methods will be used and appropriate renewable technologies and other energy efficient methods will be in place to ensure a high-quality, attractive and sustainable development

  • maintaining and enhancing an accessible transport network – connections to existing communities and the wider city will be provided and will encourage use of sustainable modes of transport including travel by foot, bus or bicycle

  • housing that meets the needs of all people - a mix of housing types will be provided including the council’s requirement for 25% of the homes to be affordable. Housing will also be provided specifically for older people within an extra care development.

  • improving the health and wellbeing of local residents – encourage healthy lifestyles with extensive green infrastructure network enabling walking and cycling. There will be spaces for play, along with more formal open space, allotments and a community hall.

  • supporting safer communities – ensuring the design maximises visibility, helping to encourage community safety and reduce the fear of crime
